MYS 2018: Royal Yacht Brokers Sail Into Monaco

This MYS we had the pleasure of interviewing company Co-Founder Tommaso Chiabra, who told us all about the origins of Royal Yacht Brokers, the company’s representation at MYS, and his predictions and aspirations for the industry.

Back in 2010, Tommaso founded Royal Yacht Brokers with his business partner in his hometown of Genoa. They have come a long way since then; now exhibiting the 40m S/Y Rox Star at Monaco Yacht Show.

"Rox Star is an incredibly appreciated boat during this yacht show," says Tommaso, "She is a boat that is a classic line on a gulet hull. People are coming from far and wide to appreciate the elegance and the design of the build."

A sailboat in a world of motor yachts at MYS, Tommaso argues that Rox Star is winning hearts and minds. "Motor yacht lovers don’t necessarily like sailboats, but they come on board and really appreciate sailing for the first time. They appreciate the experience, they appreciate the spirit," he says. Although the 40m may not offer the volumes of a motor yacht, she has nonetheless recieved an offer from a motor yacht owner; evidencing Tommasso’s claim that she really is something special.

It is the company’s Bodrum office that brings Rox Star to the waters of Port Hercules; the second of six global offices also including Genoa, Monaco, London, Dubai and Miami. Tommaso, however, has his eye on expansion. Citing Pride Yachts’ new build Illusion Plus as evidence of the current strength of the Asian maket, he tells us: "By the end of 2018 I want to explore Hong Kong, and maybe open an office there."

Ever present in the brokerage world, we look forward to seeing how Royal Yacht Brokers are represented in Fort Lauderdale, Antigua Charter Show and Miami Yacht Show over the next 12 months.

October 2, ICW Update on Carolina Beach inlet crossing

October 1, I received a credible report from a boat which has made it to Southport. They followed my routes through  Browns Inlet Crossing, New River inlet Crossing, Mason Inlet Crossing and Masonboro Inlet crossing (See September 27, posting).  From there south to Southport they reported that the Carolina Beach inlet crossing has depths which would correct to 8+ feet at MLLW on the track they made.  They report that Snows Cut seems to be about as it was.  Cape Fear River stinks like a sewer but all is good at Southport Marina. This is more good news, but it  is a report from a single vessel and is not an “all clear” for the run from Wrightsville  Beach to Southport.  Vessels transiting this area should proceed with caution and watch for unexpected shoaling. In Southport they met with Hank Pomeranz.  Hank has not begun to host the evening ICW briefings, but expects to start them up in another week or so.  They decided to go outside from Cape Fear to Winyah Bay,  so, they can give us no update on Lockwoods Folly or Shallotte.

MYS 2018: Ocean Debuts at Northrop & Johnson

MYS 2018: Ocean Debuts at Northrop & Johnson

MYS 2018: Ocean Debuts at Northrop & Johnson

Welcoming Cromwell Littlejohn of Northrop and Johnson to our Breaking News Studio on a characteristically sunny Monaco morning, we talk ocean debuts and exponential expansion…

Commercial Director of Northrop & Johnson, Cromwell Littlejohn, has high hopes for the brokerage this MYS. They are exhibiting two boats at the show, one of which is the debuting 72m Tankoa SOLO: “The Tankoa SOLO is brand new, this is her first time being seen before, she’s not even been delivered to her owner yet. She is spectacular, with a very calm feel inside,” shares Cromwell.

Also gracing Port Hercules is 39m Hakvoort Revelry, which is being unveiled for the first time after its refit and is available both sale and charter. The firm look forward to a enthusiastic response to these vessels after much anticipation.

When quizzed on any challenges that the company are facing, Cromwell conceded that the industry was experiencing something of a lack of inventory in the 40-50m range, but was eager to convey the strength of the market, especially at the upper end of the size spectrum: “The are spectacular opportunities in the larger boat market. Our clients seem to be moving up right now, opportunities are strong for buying.”

With growth looking inevitable and exponential, Northrop and Johnson are making big plans for the coming year. They have recently changed partners in Asia, bringing in Lee Marine, and 2018 has also seen the company expanding into Australia with an office headed up by Cameron Bray. We look forward to seeing what Northrop and Johnson have in store as they continue their legacy in the brokerage industry.

MYS 2018: Boutique Brokerage with West Nautical

MYS 2018: Boutique Brokerage with West Nautical

MYS 2018: Boutique Brokerage with West Nautical

Another MYS has come around, and we are joined by Kurt Fraser, Commercial Director of West Nautical, who tells us why ‘the bigger the better’ does not necessarily apply to brokerage.

Kurt Fraser was at Camper-Nicholson for 8 years before making the shift to West Nautical, where he now serves as Commercial Director. The change from a big to boutique brand was a calculated one, Kurt reveals, made with the intent of delivering hightened levels of service and expertise to clients.

"I enjoyed my time with Camper Nicholson immensely," says Fraser, "But for me, brokerage has its challenges and its limitations. A boutique firm is closer to the needs of its clients day to day."

West Nautical is a small brokerage, with fewer yachts to represent than the large industry players. This means that they are able to spend longer on their clients, resulting in a more specialised service. "For clients that are not looking for the traditional brokerage model, we are very well suited," Kurt tells us.

West Nautical’s boutique size means that they are not looking to grow in the traditional sense. They have no ambitions to expand their fleet so that they may continue to service their existing vessels at an exceptionally high standard, illustarted in Kurt’s assertion that "they know they are a big fish in our small pond".

West Nautical also differs from other brokerage houses in its services and origins. "The comapny was born out of managaement services," says Kurt, "We specialise in new construction, operational management for yachts, techncal services, regulatory knowledge, and we are expanding to formalise involement in yacht listing, charter management, and retail charter."

Although many of these services are provided by other companies, the difference lies in the fact that West Nautical have what Kurt refers to as a ‘broker free DNA’. They have client managers representing the front end, and customers have unfiltered access to a specialist team who cover eveything from regularoty, operational, technical and marketing topics. Kurt elaborates: "We operate as a group, as opposed to other brokeragers where the single point of compatct is a sales broker."

Some of West Nautical’s intimate fleet grace the docks of Port Hercule this year, including a San Lorenzo vessel, a 60m Bennetti available for charter, a 35m new Customer Line and the 34m Lady Amanda, who has been one of their greatest charter performers.
