The Yacht Broker’s Tale: My Journey from Part-Time Sales to Certified Professional

Growing up near the coast, boats were always in my blood. It started with family trips on Dad’s pride and joy, followed by weekend adventures with friends. Yet, like many, I initially followed a conventional career path—one that quickly left me feeling bored and unfulfilled.

My real passion kept pulling me back. I bought my first boat, earned my skipper’s qualification, and eventually upgraded to a larger vessel. When the time came to sell my first boat, I handled the process myself and found I was surprisingly good at it. That initial sale sparked an idea: Could I turn this into a career?

I started small—brokering boats for friends part-time alongside a few of my own buys and flips. Before long, I took the leap and became a full-time local yacht broker.

The Highs and Lows of the Trade

Early on, the listing roller coaster was real. Some months I had twelve boats on the books; other times, I struggled to keep one or two. A quick cluster of commissions had me dreaming of a life of luxury; a sudden dry spell made me question whether I’d made a massive mistake.

After one particularly good month, I decided to invest in my trade and joined a local yachting trade association.

Shortly after, I attended a two-day regional training seminar. The event wasn’t entirely relevant to the types of listings I handled, but I was hungry to learn. The experience, however, left me feeling conflicted. While the speaker was engaging and I picked up a few useful tips, there was no assessment or accountability. Everyone in the room received the exact same certificate of attendance at the end—including the guy who slept through most of the presentations.

Over a drink at the hotel bar, I shared my frustration with another broker.

He smiled and nodded. “Look, events like this are great for taking a break, catching up with peers, and getting a quick shot of motivation. Big brokerages send their teams on these ‘jollies’ all the time for those exact reasons. But if you want to systematically build real expertise, you need to join AYB. They focus on the individual broker, not just company memberships.”

Discovering the AYB Advantage

When I got home, I pulled up the AYB site and explored the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) framework. I was immediately struck by the fact that AYB is the only yacht brokerage organisation listed on the official CPD register.

Two major benefits immediately stood out to me:

  1. Structured Learning: A clear, step-by-step syllabus covering real-world brokerage practice.
  2. Marketing & Reach: Free listing opportunities across AYB platforms and integrated social media exposure. I had always struggled to leverage social media effectively for my listings, and using Yachts Classified offered a direct, powerful way to fix that.

I submitted my application and was accepted.

Putting the Tools to Work

I started taking the core online courses. While parts of the introductory modules were refresher material for me, the program left no stone unturned and filled in several critical knowledge gaps.

At the same time, I listed my inventory on AYB Yachts and Yachts Classified. The impact was almost immediate: within weeks, two prospective sellers reached out directly through the portal to list their vessels with me.

As my business stabilized, I kept pushing through the online training modules. I loved the flexibility of the self-paced assessment format. When tackling complex material, I could retake module tests as often as needed. Seeing my answers side-by-side with the correct explanations helped me master difficult legal, contractual, and technical details quickly. I even worked through modules outside my primary niche just for the challenge, getting a real sense of accomplishment whenever I finally hit a 100% score.

The Path to CPYB Distinction

Building that solid foundation gave me the confidence to aim for the ultimate professional benchmark: Certified Professional Yacht Broker (CPYB) status.

I systematically worked through the entire syllabus, mastering each section step-by-step. When I felt completely ready, I registered for the official CPYB International examination at the discounted rate available to AYB members.

Today, my business is thriving. I still attend local trade association events for the networking, the camaraderie, and the change of scenery. But nothing compares to the quiet confidence I feel every time I hand my business card to a client or fellow broker and see CPYB printed next to my name.
